How to prepare for a move – a step-by-step plan

A good move starts long before the truck arrives. With a clear plan, even a big move goes smoothly. Here is the schedule we recommend to our clients.

One month before

• Agree on the moving date – especially at the end of the month, when demand is highest.
• Go through your home room by room and decide what you move, give away or throw out.
• Check that your largest furniture fits into the new home – measure doors and hallways.
• Start collecting boxes or order them.

Two weeks before

• Report your change of address for electricity, internet, water and heating.
• Start packing things you rarely use: books, seasonal clothes, decorations.
• Label every box: room + a short description of the contents.
• If the building has a lift, ask the building council whether it can be reserved.

One week before

• Defrost and clean the fridge and freezer (at the latest the day before).
• Pack most of the kitchen, leaving only the basics.
• Prepare a “first night box”: chargers, medicines, documents, basic tools, towels, bedding.
• Take photos of the cables behind your TV and computer – reconnecting will be easier.

The day before

• Disconnect the washing machine and drain the hoses.
• Take down chandeliers and curtains, unless we are doing it.
• Secure a parking spot for the vehicle as close to the entrance as possible.
• Pack documents, cash and valuables separately and carry them yourself.

On moving day

Be there when the crew arrives to show what goes and what stays. At the new address, tell the crew where each piece of furniture goes – placing it right away saves hours of rearranging later.

Things people most often forget

• Keys to the basement, storage room and mailbox.
• Things on the balcony and in the basement.
• Screws and parts of disassembled furniture – keep them in a labelled bag.
• Meter readings at the old and the new address.
